History

Constructed before the Civil War, 20 S. Huron Street originally served as a livery stable housing work horses that pulled wagons for a Toledo ice company. In the 1940s and ‘50s, the building was used to store burlap bags for produce wholesalers in the district. The idea for the Bronze Boar began in 1990, when a bronze boar sculpture was purchased at auction in Monroe, Michigan. This sculpture is signed by G. Connary and weighs approximately 200 pounds. Its intricate detail captured the purchaser’s attention; he had to have it, despite having no idea what he would do with it. In 1999, the purchaser of the bronze boar sculpture began making plans to open a new tavern on Huron Street, and it was decided that it would be designed around the prized sculpture. To this day, upon entering the front entrance of the Bronze Boar, patrons are greeted by the sculpture prominently displayed overhead.
